The hillside of the old crones is a poetic music theatre production inspired among other things on Juan Rulfo’s novelette Pedro Páramo. Striking in the novelette is the ubiquity of sound. The sound represents a spirit world, shades of a past both distant and near, or voices of a dreamed future. Epochs merge, then split. Space is determined by sound. Far and distant. High and low. Barely audible as from behind an old wall, whisperings straight from a mouth against an ear. A call, that flies through space as an arrow. In the distance, songs; women singing. The voices mingle with the sound of footsteps (movement), the hubbub of the street. It is the hour when the children play in the streets, and fill the afternoon air with their clamour. The silence – with a head full of sounds and voices (the voices of memory).

Soprano Judith Vindevogel and mezzosoprano Gerrie de Vries present a poetic world of sounds, music and mouvement and perform music by Kaija Saariaho, Claude Vivier and new compositions of the Dutch composers Klaas de Vries and Rob Zuidam.
