On the 30th of April 2009 WALPURGIS opened the doors of her new home in Mortsel to the audience for a new FENIKS FESTIVAL.
Through the unique combination of intimacy, generosity and happening, the FENIKS FESTIVAL creates a place for surprising encounters, unexpected discoveries and the unconventional combination of genres, repertoire and artists.

Opening speech about the methodical pluralism in art and science by one of the most particular scientists in the Netherlands. André Klukhuhn wrote the philosophy bestseller De geschiedenis van het denken (2003) and the recently published Alle mensen heten Janus (2008).

Michel Massot, Tuur Florizoone & Marine Horbaczewski
When Tuur Florizoone, accordeon player and composer (known from a.o. the filmAanrijding in Moscou), the tuba and trombone virtuoso Michel Massot and the cellist Marine Horbaczewski meet, a powerful alchemy arises. While improvising, the trio conjures up strange and slightly eccentric sounds, balancing between contemporary classical music and jazz. They will perform pieces from their first cd Cinema Novo.

Midnight reading in Dutch by Josse De Pauw and Eric Thielemans of a monologue written by Jeroen Brouwers, commissioned by WALPURGIS. The title BDE refers to the phenomenon of the near-death experiences. For Brouwers it’s not a mystical and blissful sensation but rather a nightmare on the vague border between fiction and non-fiction.
