We, the Drowned is the title of a devastating novel by Danish author Carsten Jensen about the heyday and fall of his hometown of Marstal, once an important port renowned for its ships and sailors.

Taking this novel as a compass and source of inspiration, we roam across space and time. We sail the seven seas and move back and forth between myth and reality, between love for the sea and love for humankind, between drifting sailing ships and sinking warships. We look through the eyes of shipowner Albert Madsen at a world set on a collision course and we recognize our own in it. We fear Herman, the seagull killer, who lurks deeper within ourselves than we are willing to admit. Surprised, we look on when the widow Klara Friis takes over the helm in Marstal, while her son, the young captain Friis, goes to war, naked.

On board: four Dutch musical theatre-makers with an arsenal of homemade instruments, a Belgo-Iraqi dancer and theatre-maker, a violin-playing Albanian opera singer, a half-Chinese illustrator with a bass guitar, a 71-year-old Flemish actor with sea legs, and three hungry young players, a scenographer with a trumpet, a composer with a screw loose and a local choir composed of eight singers.

We, the Drowned is raw, poetic and inspired musical theatre for which WALPURGIS, BOT and Kloppend Hert are joining forces.

The story is based on the book of the same name by Carsten Jensen. After a first successful edition of the reading project, we will be diving again in 2019 with a group of enthusiasts in this book. More information can be found here.
