Judith vindevogel, artistic director of music-theatre company WALPURGIS, created this graduation-show for the musical theatre students of the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels. Smash him and bash him became an exciting educational project for which she asked not only housecompanion Stef Depover, but also composer Peter Spaepen, to join the crew.
Smash him and bash him is based on the epos we, the drownedby Danish writer Carsten Jensen. In ten scenes, life on the shore is told through the eye of a small group of seafarers in Marstal. We meet colourful characters like the hard-hearted teacher Isager, the gang around Hans Jorn, the helmsman Herman for whom you should put your guard up, the widow Anna Agidia who can weep like no other, and the young widow Klara Friis with her son Knud Erik. Like a Greek chorus, they cross time and space, they reconstruct, comment, and sing the essence of their being and they follow the comings and goings of retired captain Albert Madsen with special attention.
