Mitridate, the ‘Hannibal of the East’ and public enemy number one in Rome, knows better than anyone that no one can be trusted in the battleground that is politics. To test the loyalty of his two sons, he spreads the rumour that he has been killed in battle. He goes into a tremendous rage when he learns that his elder son, Farnace, has been collaborating with the Romans and that his fiancée Aspasia is having an affair with Sifare, his favourite son.
