In Princess Turandot, an actress, two opera singers and a ‘one-man-band’ take the young spectators on a trip to the world of classical composers like Lully, Mozart, Wagner, Bizet and Puccini. They tell a fair but fierce ancient Persian love tale about an ice princess who refuses to get married. Her admirers have a choice to make: either they solve the three riddles of the princess, or they get their head chopped off….
Seated in a labyrinth in the middle of the performers, the children experience the performance from very close-by.
There is also an audio booklet of the opera fairy tale, published by Lannoo and illustrated by Ingrid Godon.
Prinses Turandot won the YAMA (Young Audiences Music Award) Public Award 2014!
Oh you Turandot! You, ice princess!
With your frigid heart and frozen laugh.
You too will melt one day!
It will hurt when your blood starts flowing again.
It will sting like a thousand bee stings.
And you will cry human tears,
simple human tears,
and you will love, just like me!

Staging an opera for very young children is quite a task, but WALPURGIS and HETPALEIS succeeded in achieving the nigh-impossible with Princess Turandot.

Princess Turandot leaves you gasping for breath. A powerful message, artistically woven into a magical story about going your own way and finding that way where you least expect it – that is the opera Princess Turandot in a nutshell. Really clever how director Judith Vindevogel holds an interesting mirror to the audience that is very diverse in age: 4-year olds to adults. Even I, a judgemental 15-year old who feels like she is too old for fairy tales, was left astounded after the end of the show. Don’t miss this performance, it is breath-taking!

A more than intimate occasion and an experience that few adults were able to have in their childhood. Let the theatre spoil our children.

***/* The singers and musicians have a very wide range that is not only surprising but gripping and moving. In this way, this musically elaborate work is different from so many audio-CD’s: the music is it’s driving force, it creates an atmosphere and shows us the complexity of the inner contradictions. It is much more than a nice illustration for an exciting story. (…) Turn the volume up and throw a quick glance at Godon’s imagery and (re)discover the mesmerizing power of voice and music.

Princess Turandot forms the perfect symbiosis between text, image and music – in which every part is indispensable for the whole.****
